Luo Zengbin, the former head of the Chinese city of Haikou, has been sentenced to death with a suspended sentence for large-scale corruption, bribery, and abuse of power. During searches, he allegedly had 13.5 tons of gold and 23 tons of cash. This was reported by MSN, according to UNN.

According to the investigation, the official used his official position to promote business, distribute state funds, advance contracts and projects, for which he received multi-million dollar bribes. The total amount of illegal proceeds established by the court exceeded 317 million yuan, or about 46 million US dollars.
The court ruled to deprive Luo Zengbin of political rights for life, confiscate all his property, and transfer illegally obtained assets to the state treasury.
Luo Zengbin previously served as the party committee secretary of Haikou, the capital of Hainan province. Prior to that, he held leadership positions in Sichuan province.
The investigation into the official began at the end of 2024. In 2025, he was expelled from the Communist Party of China and removed from office.
In the Chinese legal system, a death sentence with a suspended sentence usually means that in the absence of new crimes, the sentence can be commuted to life imprisonment.
