The Chadian government announced the termination of the defense agreement with France, which could lead to the withdrawal of French troops from the country. This situation paves the way for strengthening Russian influence, in particular through propaganda and mercenary activities.

According to the Ministry of foreign affairs of Chad, the country is striving to fully assert its sovereignty after more than 60 years of independence. The authorities said that the termination of the agreement, which was revised in 2019, will allow to review the strategic partnerships of the state. This decision is another blow to France's historic role in Central and West Africa.
Earlier, French troops were forced to leave Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso after military coups in these countries. Chad promised to comply with all conditions for the termination of the agreement, in particular compliance with the established deadlines. The country's authorities have declared their readiness to cooperate with France to ensure a "harmonious transition".
"This decision should not undermine friendly relations between our countries," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
There are currently about 1,000 French military personnel stationed in Chad, as well as military aircraft. However, France is facing increasing pressure in the region. Senegalese President Beady Dom Faye said that French troops no longer have a place in his country, although he did not name the exact timing of their possible withdrawal.
Note that French forces have previously played a key role in the fight against terrorism, especially with Islamist groups in the Sahel. Their departure may lead to an increase in the terrorist threat in the region. At the same time, with this decision, Chad demonstrates a desire to move away from the colonial past and form an independent foreign policy. This can be a positive signal if the country balances partnerships without excessive dependence on the Russian Federation or other players.
The role of the Russian Federation in the region
Russia is actively using political, economic and military levers to strengthen its influence in Chad, as in other Central African countries. Through the Wagner PMC, Moscow offers Chad "security support", which is often accompanied by propaganda aimed at discrediting Western states, including France. Russia promises weapons and military training.
Chad also has Russia's economic interests related to access to natural resources such as oil and minerals.
recall
Chadian authorities have released Russian propagandist Maxim Shugaley, who was under arrest on charges of interfering in the country's internal affairs. After his release, Shugaley was sent to Russia.
