The Bolivian Prosecutor's Office announced the issuance of an arrest warrant for former President Evo Morales in connection with an investigation into sexual abuse of a 15-year-old minor. This was reported by Bloomberg, according to UNN.

Details

Morales' case has been under investigation since September, and the warrant was issued after he failed to appear to testify in the case.

The judge must first set a date for a hearing during which the public prosecutor will present the prosecution's case. After that, if the judge deems it necessary, he must sign an arrest warrant for Morales.

The country of 12 million people has been gripped by social unrest and clashes between rival factions of the ruling Socialist Party this year, leading to the blocking of important highways. The country's economy is suffering from a shortage of dollars and fuel after the central bank nearly exhausted its foreign exchange reserves last year, creating difficulties for importers.

Morales, 65, who served as president for 13 years, has previously denied any involvement in any crimes. He claims that the charges are an attempt by his successor, Luis Arce, to prevent him from running in next year's presidential election.

Addendum

Evo Morales is being investigated by the Bolivian justice system for alleged human trafficking and rape of a minor.

The case unfolds at a time of political instability in Bolivia, involving Evo Morales and the current president, Luis Arce.

Recall

In October, Evo Morales reported an attempted assassination attempt on his life involving the military and police. According to him, unidentified men in trucks chased and fired at his car.
