At the NATO summit in Ankara, Alliance members will commit to signing new multi-billion dollar arms supply contracts. It is also planned to confirm military support for Ukraine worth 70 billion euros.

At the NATO summit next month, Alliance countries promise to conclude multi-billion dollar agreements on arms supplies and aid to Ukraine. This is reported by Politico citing sources, UNN reports.

Details

"It is expected that at the Alliance summit in Ankara next month, NATO members will commit to concluding new arms supply contracts worth billions of dollars and increasing weapons production volumes," the publication writes.

It is noted that despite U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly pressuring NATO since his return to office last year, allies are also expected to reaffirm in a joint declaration their commitment to Article 5 on the Alliance's mutual defense.

The interlocutors note that the declaration also plans to characterize Russia "as a long-term threat."

"NATO leaders, including Trump, will gather in the Turkish capital on July 7–8 amid criticism from the U.S. that European allies did not support Washington in the war against Iran. As last year, the joint statement will be brief. NATO member ambassadors are currently discussing the details of the leaders' declaration, which may change up to the last minute. Then heads of state and government will sign the statement in Ankara. The exact amount of arms supply contracts has not yet been determined, and it is likely that at least part of the procurement agreements will be pre-agreed and reformatted," the publication adds.

It is also emphasized that Alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte wants to focus the summit primarily on building up defense industrial production, partly because he is seeking a unifying theme that will help mask internal disagreements in NATO.

"In the draft statement, NATO allies also commit to providing Ukraine with military support worth 70 billion euros and promise to allocate at least the same amount for the next year. This concerns a target funding level in which the U.S. is not expected to participate," the publication writes.
