Lithuanian border guards discovered another underground tunnel that was likely being built to smuggle migrants illegally from Belarus to Lithuania. This is already the third such tunnel found in the past two weeks. LRT reports this, citing the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service, writes UNN.

The tunnel was found near the village of Latežeris in the Druskininkai Municipality. To search for it, Lithuanian border guards enlisted specialists from Poland’s border guard service equipped with special equipment.

The underground passage was dug at a depth of about 1.5 meters beneath the physical barrier along the border. It was reinforced with logs and boards, while the entrance on the Belarusian side was camouflaged with camouflage fabric.
The tunnel was not completed in time
The tunnel extended approximately four meters into Lithuanian territory. At the same time, border guards noted that it was unfinished and did not have an exit on the Lithuanian side, making it impossible to use for illegally crossing the border.
A pre-trial investigation has been launched into the discovery of the underground passage. After the necessary procedural measures were completed, the tunnel was filled in with earth.
Earlier, border guards discovered similar unfinished tunnels on July 23 and 26 in the Varėna and Lazdijai districts near the border with Belarus.
