According to meteorologists, on Thursday at LaGuardia Airport in New York, the temperature reached 40°C, breaking the record of 38.3°C set in 1966. In Newark, the air warmed to 40.5°C, in Trenton to 38.3°C, and in Atlantic City the temperature rose to 39.4°C.
Experts note that the heat dome combined extreme heat with high humidity, and nighttime temperatures remained extremely high – around 27°C, causing people's bodies not to recover from daytime overheating.
