An unusual sight in Sicily: Mount Etna throws smoke rings into the sky

Since last week, the most active volcano in Europe has been showing an unusual spectacle - the eruption of rings of smoke and water vapor that rise high into the sky, reports UNN with reference to La Repubblica.

Details

This weekend, Europe's largest active volcano, Mount Etna, over 3,300 meters high and located on the Mediterranean island of Sicily, showed an intriguing sight: rings of smoke or water vapor rose from the crater and rose high into the sky.

For reference

"Volcanic vortex rings rise from a newly formed crater on the southeastern side of Mount Etna. They are caused by small explosions of gas bubbles in a narrow vent above the magma chamber. This is not the first case, but this phenomenon is quite rare. The previous time residents saw the rings was 300 years ago, in 1724.

The term volcanic vortex rings was coined by the English physicist William Thomson (1824-1907). Such rings have also been observed on another famous Italian volcano, Stromboli, on the island of the same name in the Mediterranean Sea. According to experts, they are completely harmless and show no signs of an upcoming eruption.

AddendumAddendum

Yesterday, a strong ash emission was recorded from the Bocca Nuova crater in Etna, which lasted about four minutes and reached a height of 5 kilometers above sea level. The phenomenon was recorded by a weather station in Catania at 15.48.

Recall

On the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland , a volcanic eruptionbegan, forcing the authorities to evacuate the residents of the city of Grindavik.
