According to the State Border Guard Service, the local resident, who had turned 24 the day before, had prepared for his swim in advance.
"I bought an aqua scooter, fins, a wetsuit and a life jacket through online stores. According to him, the equipment cost 40 thousand hryvnias. He also took care of what he would wear after crossing the border. That's why he put on a shirt, shorts and sandals over the wetsuit," said the border guards.
However, the attempt to cross the border in this way was reportedly unsuccessful, as border guards saw and caught up with the swimmer in the middle of the Danube in a boat.
"The man explained to the border guards that in this way he was trying to get to the Romanian village of Plaura, opposite Izmail, and later to Germany, allegedly for further employment," the SBGS reported.
For the attempt to illegally cross the state border of Ukraine, a report on administrative offense was drawn up against the offender under Art. 204-1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses "Illegal crossing or attempt to illegally cross the border".
