As a result of a massive Russian attack on the night of July 2, a large-scale oil product spill occurred in the Kyrylivske Lake in Kyiv. It will be cleaned up, reported the Ministry of Economy, stating that they are coordinating the lake's cleanup, and that swimming, fishing, and any contact with the water in Kyrylivske and Yordanske lakes are strictly prohibited, reports UNN.
As a result of a strike on a gas station in the Obolon district of the capital, a serious environmental disaster occurred – a large-scale spill of oil products into the lake, which is part of the Opechen lake system
As noted, thanks to the prompt work of the services, the spread of the bulk of the fuel was contained on the approaches to the reservoir. However, according to preliminary estimates, more than 350 tons of oil products and emulsion still entered the lake.
"Specialists are implementing a two-stage plan to clean the reservoir. The State Emergency Service has already localized the contamination using booms, and special equipment is now removing the main layer of oil products from the lake's surface," the Ministry of Economy stated.
The next stage is treating the water area with a special sorbent that will bind the remnants of the oil film for their subsequent removal. This will help prevent contamination of the bottom and groundwater.
"The contamination was localized within the first hours, but the damage to the environment is extremely serious. The Ministry of Economy has already joined in documenting the environmental damage," said Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture Iryna Ovcharenko.
In the near future, the Commission on Technogenic and Environmental Safety and Emergency Situations will approve a comprehensive liquidation plan, which includes the final cleanup of the lake, constant water quality monitoring, control over neighboring water bodies, assessment of environmental damage, and subsequent restoration of the ecosystem.
Until the chemical state of the water is completely normalized, swimming, fishing, and any contact with the water in Kyrylivske and Yordanske lakes are strictly prohibited
