From May 28-31, the fourth stage of the Climbing World Cup took place in Alcobendas, Spain, featuring 248 athletes from 43 countries. Based on the competition results, 18-year-old Polina Khalkevych stepped onto a podium of this level for the first time in her career!
Polina began the tournament with a confident performance in the qualifiers, recording the seventh-fastest time of 6.79 seconds. In the knockout stage, the Ukrainian consecutively eliminated representatives from Italy, Spain (the second seed), and China.
In the final heat, Polina faced the world vice-champion, Emma Hunt from the USA. Ultimately, the Ukrainian clocked a time of 6.39 seconds but lost to her opponent, who set a new continental record (6.08 seconds).
As noted by the NOC, this is the debut medal at the senior World Cup stages for the young Ukrainian climber. Previously, her best result was a tenth-place finish at the season opener in Wujiang, China.
