Turkey has stated that the US has granted it an exemption from sanctions against the Russian Gazprombank, allowing Ankara to pay for gas imports. This is reported by Bloomberg, reports UNN.
Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said that after a series of negotiations with US officials, the country has been granted permission to continue making payments for gas through Gazprombank.
The US sanctions imposed last month against Gazprombank, a key financial institution that countries use to secure natural gas supplies, have raised concerns in many countries, including the European Union. These sanctions have become an obstacle for those making payments through the Russian bank.
On Wednesday, Hungary also reported that it had received a similar exemption from the sanctions.
Earlier, Bayraktar had stated that Turkey needed such a relaxation, as otherwise it could be threatened with sanctions.
The US Department of the Treasury has not yet provided any comments on granting this exemption.
