Three people sustained serious injuries in the accident in Berlin's Lichtenberg district, a fire service spokesperson said.
According to preliminary data, the tram collided with an overhead line pole at a curve.
The right side of the train was torn open, and the rear car of the tram derailed, the fire service spokesperson reported.
About 60 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, and electricity was temporarily cut off at the crash site.
Tram routes M5 and M7 were temporarily suspended, and clearing the consequences of the derailment will take some time.
