The authors point out that this step was taken after a lengthy investigation revealed that the Chinese business had violated the European Union's General Data Protection Rules by sending information to China for engineers to access.
The fine is likely to be the third largest in GDPR history, following previous fines of EUR 1.2 billion against Facebook owner Meta Platforms Inc. and EUR 746 million against Amazon.com Inc.
According to sources, the exact amount of the fine for TikTok and the timing of the decision are not final and may change.
