According to the publication, the attacks occurred less than three weeks after the signing of a memorandum under which Iran agreed to cease attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the incident took place after the expiration of a week-long agreement between the U.S. and Iran to halt attacks in the area.
Vessels sustained damage, U.S. may launch retaliatory strike
According to U.S. officials, one of the missiles struck a tanker moving near the coast of Oman, causing a fire. The incident was also reported by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations.
Another commercial vessel, according to an Axios source, was also hit by an Iranian missile. Both vessels sustained significant damage, but no deaths or injuries were reported.
Axios notes that the U.S. is likely considering launching retaliatory strikes against Iranian targets. Meanwhile, last week, indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran in Doha ended without significant progress regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
