Abelardo did not win the election
The current president claims that the elections were falsified using an "algorithm and foreign financing, which is prohibited by our constitution." At the same time, as Bloomberg notes, he has not publicly provided any evidence to support his claims.
The transfer of power takes place amid political tension
The transfer of presidential powers in Colombia is scheduled for August 7. According to Bloomberg's assessment, Petro's statements increase political uncertainty and could lead to protests by his supporters after the change of power.
Petro himself announced that he plans to address his supporters on Colombia's Independence Day, July 20.
The current president's ally Iván Cepeda also called for civil disobedience, stating that Abelardo de la Espriella supposedly did not have the right to run due to having U.S. citizenship.
