Pentagon successfully tests hypersonic missile

The U.S. Army's Office of Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies, in cooperation with the U.S. Navy's Strategic Systems Programs, recently successfully completed a comprehensive flight test of a conventional hypersonic rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Station, Florida.

This was reported by the US Department of Defense, UNN reports.

Details

This test is a continuation of several tests in which a general hypersonic airframe reached hypersonic speeds at specified distances, and shows that we can put this capability in the hands of the military

- said Army Secretary Christine Wormuth.

This is the second successful comprehensive All Up Round (AUR) flight test this year, as well as the first live firing for the long-range hypersonic weapon system.

This test is an important milestone in the development of one of our most advanced weapons systems. As we prepare for the first delivery of this system to our Army partners, we will continue to work to integrate the Conventional Prompt Strike system on Navy ships to maintain our leadership as the world's most powerful fighting force

- said Navy Secretary Carlos Del Torro.

The data obtained during this test will help the U.S. Army deploy the AUR for the first time and will also enable the U.S. Navy to use it at sea.

This test is a demonstration of the successful cooperation between the Navy and the Army, which allowed the development of a transformational hypersonic weapon that will provide unsurpassed capabilities for joint combat missions

- said Vice Admiral Johnny R. Wolf Jr, Director of Strategic Systems Programs for the U.S. Navy, which is the lead developer of the general hypersonic missile.

The AUR Joint Hypersonic Missile supports the national defense strategy and will provide combatant commanders with a variety of capabilities to maintain and enhance integrated deterrence and build sustainable advantages for the Joint Force.

Hypersonic systems flying at Mach 5 combine high speed, range, maneuverability and altitude to quickly and effectively destroy hard-to-reach and heavily defended targets.

The reactivity, maneuverability, and survivability of hypersonic weapons are unmatched by traditional means of precision targeting, especially in conditions of access denial or restricted areas

- said Lt. Gen. Robert A. Rush, director of hypersonic technology, directed energy, space, and rapid acquisition at RCCTO.

The U.S. Army's RCCTO and Navy's SSP programs are working together to rapidly deploy land and sea-based variants of a hypersonic weapon system that will meet critical joint warfighting needs.

The use of a joint hypersonic rocket and the possibility of joint tests allow for a more aggressive delivery schedule and cost savings.

Cooperation between the RCCTO and SSP allows the services to stay ahead of new threats and maintain an advantage on the battlefield.

Recall

The British army used high-energy laser weapons for the first time, and an armored vehicle mounted on  successfully destroyed unmanned aerial vehicles.
