The International Gymnastics Federation has lifted sanctions on Russians and Belarusians. Athletes will compete in competitions with national symbols and anthems.

The International Gymnastics Federation has allowed athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete in international competitions under their national symbols — with their flag and anthem. This was reported by the Center for Strategic Communications, according to UNN.

According to the decision of the executive committee, Russian and Belarusian gymnasts have been allowed to participate in international competitions using their flag and anthem

- the statement reads.

The decision was made following recommendations from the International Olympic Committee, which in early May urged sports federations to ease restrictions on Belarus. At the same time, no separate similar recommendations regarding Russia were provided.

Sanctions by the International Gymnastics Federation had been in place since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. Starting in 2024, some athletes were allowed to compete under a "neutral" status and participate in qualifying events for the 2024 Olympics.

As a reminder

In recent months, a number of international sports federations have begun to ease restrictions.

In particular, the International Wrestling Federation has already lifted sanctions against the Russian Federation and Belarus, and World Aquatics also previously made a decision to restore their participation in certain disciplines.
