General Min Aung Hlaing, who seized power from elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, is charged with crimes against humanity for deportation and persecution of the Rohingya.
Almost a million people were forced to move to neighboring Bangladesh, fleeing the so-called ethnic cleansing campaign, which was accompanied by mass rapes, murders and arson attacks on homes.

The Rohingya are a large ethnic and religious group originating primarily from Myanmar, a country with a Buddhist population.
