Movement is especially beneficial during pregnancy, as it allows the pregnant body to cope with the additional load. This was stated in a comment to UNN by obstetrician-gynecologist Olga Dubenko.
The doctor emphasized that movement is so beneficial that doctors have already abandoned old recommendations for strict bed rest, even in the presence of certain abnormalities – under such conditions, the pregnant woman is recommended loads that correspond to her condition. The only exceptions may be pathologies that can cause miscarriage.
"But, of course, if it is a physiological pregnancy, then it is very beneficial. If it is a physiological pregnancy, then, of course, all movements are beneficial and should be used in all management of pregnancy. From the pool to yoga, water and even underwater procedures," the doctor explained.
Dubenko emphasizes that movement is important because certain features of blood circulation arise during pregnancy.
"Movement helps improve blood circulation and oxygen saturation. Everything works according to physical laws, the heart works like a pump. But if a woman is pregnant, her blood circulation features are not the same as those of non-pregnant women. Therefore, of course, all this contributes to blood circulation and improved well-being. Blood is oxygen. Oxygen and all necessary elements, microelements for a pregnant woman," Dubenko explained.
A woman experiences great physical exertion during pregnancy, and movement helps her endure it.
Dubenko advises choosing physical activity according to the state of health and the stage of pregnancy, and attending schools for pregnant women and special classes where a specialist can select the necessary program and monitor the process.
Reminder
UNN wrote about prenatal yoga – a practice that combines gentle physical exercises, breathing techniques, and relaxation, adapted specifically for pregnant women. In recent years, it has gained widespread popularity. Such classes are also available in Kyiv, for example, at the capital's Perinatal Center.
The British scientific journal BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth indicates that regular yoga practice can shorten the duration of labor and increase the likelihood of natural childbirth. Most studies also indicate that yoga during pregnancy effectively reduces anxiety, lowers stress levels, and increases psychological resilience.
Also, studies indicate that yoga contributes to the prolongation of pregnancy: the average duration of pregnancy in women who practiced yoga was 38.6 weeks compared to 36.7 weeks in the control group.
"Regular classes help you better feel your body, tune into the birth process, and find inner support. Suitable for most healthy pregnant women," they say at the Kyiv Perinatal Center.
But it is important that such classes should be conducted under the supervision of specialists and with adherence to safety techniques.
Most importantly, a doctor's consultation is needed before starting classes. If the specialist has not identified any contraindications, then you can start classes – preferably under the supervision of a trainer.
The pace of performing exercises during such yoga classes is slow. The load is excessive if the woman cannot speak at a normal pace. Classes should be held in a well-ventilated room.
Pregnant women are advised to avoid excessive stretching, twisting with pressure on the abdomen. Exercises involving lying on the stomach and back are also limited, especially after the 16th week of pregnancy.
