South Korea's opposition is initiating a new vote on the impeachment of President Yun Suk-yol this Saturday. The reason is his decision to declare and subsequently lift martial law in the country.

South Korean President Yun Suk-young is preparing for another crucial Saturday for his political future. After avoiding an impeachment vote last week, Yoon will face a new resignation offer.

South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung said on Friday that the best way to restore order in the country is to impeach President Yun Suk-yol. Opposition parties have introduced another impeachment bill and plan to hold a vote on Saturday at 16:00 (07:00 GMT).

The impeachment followed Yun's controversial decision to declare and then lift martial law. Last Tuesday, the president surprised the country with a televised statement in which he declared a state of emergency, justifying it as necessary to “protect the nation and normalize state affairs.” However, the move was seen as an attempt to thwart the parliamentary opposition that has paralyzed the government.

The National Assembly's reaction was swift: six hours after the announcement, the parliament voted to lift the state of emergency. As for Yoon's decision, it caused a strong wave of criticism. In particular, the opposition put forward an impeachment motion, which was later rejected due to the lack of a quorum. However, now the opposition Democratic Party, which has a parliamentary majority, is back on the attack with a new proposal.

Democratic Party leader Lee called on PPP members to “join in and vote for impeachment,” saying that “history will remember and record your decision.” A vote to impeach Yun would send the case to the Constitutional Court, which would have up to six months to decide whether to remove him from office or reinstate him.

Recall

Police are investigating President Yun Suk-yol and high-ranking officials over the declaration of martial law. Prosecutors have banned former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun from traveling.

Former South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun attempted suicide in a Seoul detention center. He is being held on charges of mutiny related to the investigation into the declaration of martial law.
