The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the circumstances of the death of a serviceman in Odesa region during an attempt to illegally cross the border, and criminal proceedings have been opened, the SBI said on Monday, UNN reports.

"SBI officers opened criminal proceedings over the death of a serviceman who tried to illegally cross the Ukrainian-Moldovan border," the bureau said.
According to the SBI, "according to operational data, on July 14, 2024, in the Zakhariv district of Odesa region, four servicemen escaped from a training unit and tried to cross to the Republic of Moldova on foot. The fugitives hired a taxi to get to the border.
"While trying to cross the border, border guards noticed them and detained them. One of the fugitives attacked the border guard, trying to escape. In response, he used his service weapon and shot the attacker," the SBI said.
Reportedly, urgent investigative actions are underway, and all the circumstances of the incident are being established.
