ISW notes that one of the Russian military blogger said that during the shelling of Kyiv on December 8, Russian troops used X-55 decoy cruise missiles, which resemble modernized version of the X-101 missile to confuse Ukrainian air defense.
The blogger complained that it was "practically impossible" to launch enough decoy missiles of the X-55 to overload Ukrainian air defense due to the limited number of Russian Tu-95 and T-160 bombers.
Previously, Russian troops used X-55 missiles along with other missile and drone variants as decoys to to overcome Ukrainian air defense and compensate for the decline in stockpiles of of precision-guided missiles. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly emphasized that Ukrainian forces do not have enough air defense systems to cover the entire territory of Ukraine to the same extent as Ukrainian air defense currently protects Kyiv,
In addition, Russian troops are conducting intensified aerial reconnaissance before launching large-scale long-range strikes on targets in eastern and southern Ukraine.
