Oscar-winning Chinatown screenwriter Robert Towne dies at 89

Screenwriter and director Robert Towne, known for his work on the film Chinatown, for which he won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, has died at the age of 89. Writes UNN with reference to Variety.

Robert Towne died on Monday at his home in Los Angeles, according to his publicist, Kerry McClure.

From the beginning of his career in the 1960s, when he worked as an actor and screenwriter on Roger Corman's B movies, Towne has grown into one of the industry's most renowned screenwriting doctors, often called upon to solve structural problems in other auteurs' films.

Towne gained great recognition in the 1970s, when three of his screenplays were released in 14 months to critical and commercial acclaim: "The Last Detail (1973), Chinatown (1974) and Shampoo (1975). All three were nominated for Oscars, with Chinatown winning the award for Best Original Screenplay.
