Since October last year, 477 tons of pesticides have been eliminated in Odesa region. This was reported by the head of the Odesa Regional State Administration, Oleh Kiper, UNN reports.
"477 tons, which is more than 20 trucks, is the amount of hazardous waste we have managed to eliminate since October last year to date.
This poison has been in our region since the last century: in 1979, a ship with dous on board sank near Odesa. When the liquidators opened some of the burial sites, they found that the bags with the hazardous substance were already on the verge of depressurization. It's good that they started neutralizing it in time," Kiper said.
A specialized company destroyed the dust by burning it.
"Today, the last remnants were eliminated. Odesa region is the first region in Ukraine to completely get rid of Soviet-era pesticides," Kiper added.
Back in 1972, the pesticides were recovered from the Mozdok ship that sank in the Gulf of Odesa. In 1978, back in the days of Soviet rule, a bunker was built to store them, and since then the poison has been stored there in soft big-bag containers.
