Occupants use prisoners of war as human shields: Prosecutor General's Office launches criminal proceedings

The Office of the Prosecutor General has opened a criminal investigation into violation of the laws and customs of war based on a video of Russians using prisoners of war as human shields. This was reported by the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office, UNN report.

Under the procedural guidance of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Prosecutor's Office, criminal proceedings were initiated on the fact of violation of the laws and customs of war (Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).The basis for entering information into the URPI was a video that was distributed on the Internet by journalists of Radio Liberty

According to preliminary data, Russian military personnel, disregarding the norms of international humanitarian law, brazenly used Ukrainian prisoners of war as human shields during hostilities against the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the Zaporizhzhia sector.

Priority investigative (search) actions are currently underway. The course of the pre-trial investigation is under the control of the Prosecutor General's Office. The pre-trial investigation in the criminal proceedings is carried out by investigators of the SBU Office in Zaporizhzhia region.

Addendum 

Earlier, UNN reported that Russian occupants use captured soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as "human shields" during the storming of Ukrainian positions. This "tactic" of the Russians was recorded by an aerial reconnaissance drone. 

As a reminder,

on December 2, a video of the killing of unarmed Ukrainian soldiers who surrendered appeared online. This is a war crime in violation of the Geneva Conventions, and requires the Red Cross and the UN to take action.

Subsequently, the Ukrainian Armed Forces' StratCom confirmed the war crime.

 Ukrainian Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets appealed to the Red Cross and the UN Monitoring Mission after the killing of two Ukrainian soldiers.
