Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus has been appointed head of the interim government of Bangladesh. This is reported by the Dhaka Tribune newspaper, UNN reports.

Details

The decision was made following a meeting between the President and the leaders of the Students Against Discrimination movement. A full cabinet of the interim government will be formed after consultations with various political parties.

On August 5, after numerous protests, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced her resignation and left the country. The country's army announced the formation of an interim government. The leaders of student protests stated that they would not accept the government headed by the army.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus said he was ready to head the interim cabinet, as demanded by demonstrators participating in the protests against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasin. He also emphasized the need to hold free elections in the republic.

In 2006, Muhammad Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on economic development. Through his bank, Grameen Bank, he provided low-interest microloans to poor people in Bangladesh. In January 2024, Mr. Yunus was sentenced to prison in Bangladesh. The Nobel laureate is currently in Paris.
