No blackouts are expected in the near future: YASNO tells about the situation in the energy sector amid the abnormal heat

Amid the heatwave that has persisted for the past few days, Ukraine has once again faced a power shortage, leading to the return of blackout schedules. Currently, the energy sector has managed to stabilize the situation. This was stated by YASNO CEO, UNN reports.

Details

According to him, repair work to restore the power sector is underway virtually everywhere today -  both at generation facilities and infrastructure.

Let me remind you that half of the power system is destroyed. According to KSE estimates, the direct losses of the electricity sector (distribution, transmission, generation) at the end of April amounted to more than $11 billion

He explained that today, to varying degrees, Ukraine receives electricity from the United States:

  • internal resources, where heat generation is heavily damaged and the main source of electricity is NPPs. Scheduled repairs are also underway at the nuclear power plant to prepare it for the winter.
  • of imported electricity. We import electricity from five countries (Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, and Moldova) in significant volumes. The cross-border section is usually loaded by 60-80%. For example, today we plan to import 19660 MWh with a maximum capacity of up to 1333 MW. We also select surpluses from neighboring countries in an emergency mode.

During the heat wave, these resources were not enough, so stabilization blackouts were introduced. Now (at least for today) there are no blackouts because the power industry is miraculously managing to squeeze the most out of what is available. Ukrenergo and other experts predict that there will be no serious blackouts in the near future. However, no one can guarantee this, it all depends on the fighting

- Serhiy Kovalenko said.

Recall

DTEK explained that before the massive Russian shelling of the Ukrainian energy system, Ukraine had a so-called "airbag" - while some power plants were being repaired, others were operating.

However, Russia destroyed and damaged half of the hydroelectric power plants and 90% of thermal power plants, which affects the power system, especially during abnormal heat.
