In May 2026, the Mazda CX-50 overtook the CX-5 due to demand for hybrids. Sales of the model grew by 107%, totaling 14,897 units in a single month.

In May 2026, the Mazda CX-50 crossover outsold the updated CX-5 model for the first time — 14,897 units were sold last month, which is 107.2% more than in the same period last year. According to the Japanese automaker, the main driver of this growth was record demand for the CX-50 Hybrid version. This was reported by Autoblog, according to UNN.

Details

In May 2026, sales of the CX-5 model amounted to 7,805 units compared to 9,501 units in May 2025.  Sales of the CX-50 model in May 2026 reached 14,897 units compared to 7,188 units in May 2025.

In the same segment, the CX-5 model sold only 7,805 units in May, which is 17.9% less than a year ago. Next year, Mazda will release the CX-5 Hybrid, but currently, this model is only available with a conventional four-cylinder engine.

Mazda continued to build strong momentum in May, with total sales up 35% compared to last year. This growth reflects steady progress across the brand's portfolio, led by the ongoing ramp-up of the CX-50, where performance is accelerating as both consumer awareness and vehicle availability at dealers nationwide improve. Electrification remains a key driver of performance, as evidenced by the CX-50 Hybrid, whose sales grew by more than 80% compared to last year

- the publication notes.

Despite a successful month for the CX-50, the CX-5 model still leads the sales race for the first five months of 2026. So far this year, 53,003 units of the CX-5 have been sold (compared to 56,501 units in the same period of 2025). At the same time, CX-50 sales since the beginning of 2026 have reached 52,132 units (compared to 38,243 units in the same period of 2025). The figures are very close, and this could be the first sign of a leadership change in favor of the CX-50. The 2026 CX-5 model appeared on the market only a few months after the start of the year, and a significant portion of those sales came from remaining 2025 model year inventory.

In January, the CX-50 did start the year strong, outselling the CX-5 (10,415 vs. 9,873 units), but in April, the CX-5 again surpassed the CX-50 (10,206 vs. 8,201 units). A similar situation was observed in March and February.

Mazda representatives told Autoblog that although the CX-50 and CX-5 have similar price tags and are in the same size segment, they attract different customers. The CX-5 is more often compared to mainstream options like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, while the CX-50 is compared to more rugged SUVs like the Subaru Outback and Toyota 4Runner. Buyers also highly value the CX-50 Turbo version — 20% of customers have chosen it throughout the model's existence. However, the CX-50 hybrid version has now become so popular that it accounts for more than a third of all purchases.

Overall, May was a very successful month for Mazda: along with the CX-50 model, the brand sold 39,066 vehicles, which is 35% more than in May 2025. Although Mazda passenger car models accounted for only 5,174 units of this total, they all showed good growth both for the month and for the current year as a whole. In May, 4,121 units of the Mazda3 were sold (a 68% increase), with a total of 16,665 units since the beginning of the year (a 10.8% increase). The MX-5 Miata sports car sold 1,053 units (a 196.6% increase), reaching 3,911 units for 2026 (a 10.9% increase).
