Ombudsmen of Ukraine and Russia meet in Belarus to discuss conditions of detention of prisoners of war. The day before, 189 Ukrainians, including the defenders of Mariupol and Zmeinyi Island, were released as part of the exchange.

Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets met with Russian Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova in Belarus. They discussed mutual visits of prisoners of war on both sides to improve conditions of detention and the creation by Russia of mixed medical commissions for the repatriation of seriously wounded and seriously ill, UNN reports .

Yesterday, in addition to the good news, I had a conversation with the Russian Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova on the territory of the Republic of Belarus. Together we talked to prisoners of war from both sides, who were returned yesterday as part of the exchange

- Lubinets wrote.

He noted that it was important to hear about the conditions of detention, the availability or lack of medical care, as well as visits to places of detention by ICRC representatives.

“In addition, the parties once again touched upon the issues of mutual visits of prisoners of war on both sides to improve their conditions of detention and the creation by Russia of mixed medical commissions for the repatriation of seriously wounded and seriously ill persons. They also raised the issues of returning civilians, family reunification and further implementation of other humanitarian initiatives,” Lubinets said.

The Ombudsman emphasized that it is important for Ukraine to prioritize the Geneva Conventions and ensure that human rights are respected.

“That's why I emphasize this during every meeting!” he added.
