The US and Iran are discussing a plan to open the Strait of Hormuz approximately 30 days after reaching a cessation of hostilities agreement. This was reported by Reuters with reference to a Nikkei publication and a diplomatic source in the Middle East, according to UNN.
Details
According to the publication, during this period, Iran will continue demining the strait, after which vessels from all countries will be able to safely navigate the route without transit fees from Tehran. It is also reported that the ceasefire regime agreed upon in early April is planned to be extended for another 60 days.
During the two-month pause, the parties are expected to hold negotiations regarding the Iranian nuclear program. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the key routes for global oil and gas exports, so its potential opening is being closely monitored by global markets.
