South Korean police have arrested a man on suspicion of causing a series of devastating forest fires that have killed 30 people in the south of the country in recent days.

"We are checking the evidence," says a police representative of Gyeongsangbuk-do province. According to the police, the arrested man denies the charges.

One of the strongest simultaneous forest fires in the history of South Korea is devastating the southeast of the country, thousands of people have been evacuated.
According to the Korea Forest Service, the fires covered more than 48,000 hectares, which is equivalent to approximately 80% of the area of the country's capital, Seoul. Approximately 4,000 structures, including houses, factories and a number of national treasures, were destroyed by the fire. According to updated data, at least 30 people died.
