Mozambican authorities said on Sunday that the death toll from the powerful cyclone Chido has risen to 94 people. This was reported by the BBC, UNN reports.
Details
The country's National Institute for Risk Assessment and Disaster Management (INGD) reported that 768 people were injured.
It is also reported that the cyclone has affected more than 622,000 people in total.
It is noted that Chido struck Mozambique, in southern Africa, on December 15 with wind speeds of 260 km/h and 250 mm of precipitation in the first 24 hours.
The same cyclone first wreaked havoc on the French territory of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean and then moved to Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe.
In Mozambique, the storm hit the northern provinces, which are regularly affected by cyclones.
The cyclone had the most negative impact on the education and healthcare sectors. In particular, school infrastructure was severely damaged.
Recall
The French territory of Mayotte was hit by a powerful cyclone with wind speeds of over 225 km/h. Rescuers are searching for survivors among the destroyed settlements, and the population is experiencing an acute shortage of water and food.
