Rowlands, nominated for an "Oscar" for the films "A Woman Under the Influence" in 1974 and "Gloria" in 1980, died at her home in Indian Wells, California.

The cause of death was not specified, but reports indicate that she suffered from Alzheimer's disease.

According to Deadline, she retired from cinema in 2015, having received four "Emmy" awards, two "Golden Globes" and two "Oscar" nominations.

"A Woman Under the Influence" and "Gloria" were joint works with her former husband John Cassavetes.

She received "Emmys" for "The Betty Ford Story", "Face of a Stranger", "Hysterical Blindness" and "The Incredible Mrs Ritchie".

In 2015, she was awarded an honorary "Oscar" for her long acting career.

"Working for so long? I didn't even think I would live that long," she recently told Variety magazine.

"The Notebook" was filmed in 2004 by her son Nick Cassavetes, who recently told Entertainment Weekly about how his mother played a character suffering from dementia.

"We spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer's disease and wanting to be authentic in this, and now it's been five years since she's had Alzheimer's disease," he said.
