Details
French farmers have launched nationwide protests against the free trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur (the economic union of South American countries).
The FNSEA and Jeunes Agriculteurs unions have called for nationwide protests on Monday and Tuesday. According to Le Parisien newspaper, actions are planned in 80 out of about 100 French departments.
“We are against the conclusion of an unbalanced agreement that could destroy part of French agriculture,” Arnaud Rousseau, head of the agricultural union FNSEA, told La Tribune Dimanche.

Farmers insist that this agreement should be fundamentally changed, as it does not currently comply with the Paris Climate Agreement and equal production conditions.
For reference
The agreement between the EU and the Mercosur alliance with its member countries Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay is expected to create one of the world's largest free trade areas with more than 700 million inhabitants. Its main goal is to reduce customs duties and thus stimulate trade.
