Details

The incident occurred on Saturday. All those rescued were brought to Calais the following morning. According to authorities, assistance was initially provided to seven people off the coast of Wimereux, including a woman who had lost consciousness—she was evacuated by helicopter.

Separately, another six people were rescued during a different incident, bringing the total number of those saved to 119.

Dangerous Route

The Coast Guard emphasized that the English Channel remains one of the most dangerous maritime routes for migrants.

This maritime area is one of the busiest in the world, and weather conditions are often severe. Therefore, it is a particularly dangerous area, even when the sea appears calm

– a spokesperson for the service stated.

The operation took place less than a week after the UK and France reached a new £662 million agreement to deter illegal crossings across the strait.
