Freight transportation in the russian federation is becoming more expensive at a frantic pace. Over the year, the cost of transportation has increased by almost a third, 28.8%, with the most significant jump occurring very recently: in just the last month and a half, tariffs have surged by another 17.5%.
The main reason for this price explosion is quite obvious. Drivers spend hours standing in lines at gas stations, and some carriers are refusing trips altogether due to a lack of fuel or the fear that fulfilling an order will simply be impossible and the trip will result in a loss
It is also reported that price increases have been recorded on all one hundred routes considered the most popular in the russian federation, and on some routes, rates have soared by 150% over the year. Some carriers are already refusing long-haul mainline trips, switching to intra-regional transportation, where the risk of being left without fuel is lower. According to experts, up to 20% of freight vehicles in the country are currently simply idle.
Carriers emphasize that multi-hour queues at gas stations directly increase travel time. To transport the same volume of cargo, more time and equipment are now needed, which only drives tariffs up even further.
The market has effectively switched to ultra-short-term planning mode: amid constant fuel risks, carriers are forced to revise rates literally every few weeks, without the ability to calculate the economics of trips in advance. The fuel crisis, which the kremlin is trying to downplay, is increasingly turning into a structural problem for the country's entire logistics system
