Facebook Messenger is going to fix HD photo sharing

Meta improves Facebook Messenger's photo and video sharing capabilities by allowing users to share HD photos, larger files up to 100 MB, and create shared albums for group chats.

Meta has announced that it is streamlining the ability to share HD photos on Facebook Messenger, UNN reports citing The Verge.

Details

The publication points out that Facebook gave Messenger users the ability to share photos in 4K resolution back in 2017. But now, Meta has announced that users can now share photos in HD in the app. As stated, the short explanation is that in this case, HD means 4K.

Liz Sweeney, a representative of Facebook Messenger's public relations team, explained in an email that 4K photos (specifically, 4096 x 4096 pixels per inch) used to be more compressed, and how they looked "depended on the network conditions of both the sender and the receiver." Now, according to Sweeney, they won't be compressed as much, and users will have a new HD button that allows them to share files in 4K. And if you don't click the button, the photos will be shared in 2K instead.

Messenger will also allow users to share files up to 100 MB in size. This is up from the 25 MB limit previously set, which will make it easier to share videos as they won't need to be broken into smaller pieces before sending. The publication gives an example for context: a minute of video on an iPhone with a resolution of 1080p and a frequency of 60 frames per second in SDR format takes about 170 MB.

The company says it's also adding a new album sharing feature that allows users to create shared albums of photos and videos for group chats so people can collect images from, for example, group travel.

Meta says that any group member can edit the album, including adding or deleting images. Group members can also download items from the album. The company says that this feature will be implemented in the coming weeks, so if you don't have it yet, you may be further in line, the publication notes.

Finally, the company has reportedly introduced QR codes and links to connect with people. This, as indicated, can come in handy if you're on the go and don't want to add someone's phone number to your contact list.
