Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov, accused of providing false testimony and fabricating records of bribery of US President Joe Biden and his son Hunter, has entered into a plea agreement. This was reported by The Guardian, according to UNN.
Details
It is noted that Alexander Smirnov is going to plead guilty to four charges, including tax evasion and obstruction of justice by providing false information to the FBI, according to a statement from the court in California.
The text of the plea agreement states that the events Smirnov reported to the FBI were fabricated. At the time, he said that officials of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma had illegally paid $5 million in bribes to Joe Biden, when he was vice president, and his son Hunter, who was on the company's board
Prosecutors and the defendant himself are asking for a sentence of 4 to 6 years in prison.
Smirnov's lawyers, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld, said they would defend a fair sentence in court and declined to comment further.
In addition, Smirnov pleaded guilty to tax crimes: having earned more than two million dollars between 2000 and 2022, he avoided paying taxes. He spent more than $1 million of these funds on buying an apartment in Las Vegas, renting a Bentley, and other luxury items.
The court has not yet set a date for Smirnov's lawsuit.
