The issue of sending European soldiers to Ukraine will also be discussed at a meeting of EU ambassadors in the so-called Political and Security Committee (PSC) on Tuesday. The final decision should be taken no later than November.
In mid-November, the mandate of the current European training mission for Ukrainian soldiers (EUMAM UKR), which has so far taken place exclusively within the EU and mainly in Germany and Poland, is due to be extended after two years. The mandate may therefore be extended to include training directly in Ukraine in the future.
France desperately wants Europeans to honor Kiev's request and train soldiers in Ukraine to supplement existing training. Paris is supported by the Baltic states, Poland, Denmark and Sweden. The German government, on the other hand, opposes training Ukrainian soldiers locally. The FRG fears further escalation and incalculable risks. So far, Berlin's position is shared by Malta, Austria, Slovenia and Hungary.
