Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán claims that the European Union allegedly plans to admit Ukraine to the EU in 2027 so that it can receive funding from the next seven-year budget of the European Union, UNN reports with reference to The Guardian.
According to Orbán, during the last EU summit, leaders were allegedly presented with a document outlining Brussels' plans for Ukraine's accession.
"They want to admit Ukraine in 2027. This is because they want to give Ukraine money from the EU budget, the seven-year budget that will start in 2028. This means that these funds will be taken from us, from Central European countries," Orbán said.
He added that, in his opinion, there is a limited time for Ukraine to join the EU before the start of the new budget period.
Orbán again spoke out against Ukraine's membership in the European Union, stating that Ukraine allegedly "cannot protect Europe from Russia" and, on the contrary, "will drag Europe into war."
The Hungarian prime minister also believes that the funds planned for Ukraine should be used to develop the armies of EU countries.
In addition, he stated that Ukraine should allegedly be left "between two blocs" for security reasons.
The publication notes that these statements by Orbán should be viewed in the context of the upcoming elections in Hungary, where the topic of Ukraine is one of the key issues.
According to the latest Zavecz Research poll, the opposition Tisza party has the support of 49% of determined voters, while Orbán's Fidesz party has 39%.
It should be recalled that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine will be technically ready to join the EU by 2027. He stated that by the end of 2026, Ukraine will complete the main steps necessary for membership.
