Rapper Drake has accused another musician, Kendrick Lamar, Universal Music Group (UMG) and Spotify of conspiring to promote Lamar's track and muffle his own music. This is stated in Drake's legal petition to the Supreme Court of New York, UNN reports citing The Verge.
Details
Drake claims that Lamar's hit "Not like us" gained popularity in unfair competition due to shady business practices on the part of Spotify.
He writes that in 2024, UMG did not rely on chance or even conventional business practices to break into Spotify and possibly other music platforms. Instead, she launched a campaign to manipulate and saturate streaming services and broadcasts with the song "Not like Us" to make it go viral, including through bots and pay-to-play deals.
The petition also accuses UMG of giving Spotify a lower license rate for the song "Not like Us" in exchange for the streaming platform recommending the song to listeners.
UMG denied all the charges.
While some artists have actually been caught using automated tools to make a profit, Spotify has an entire section on its website that warns fans and artists to be wary of "artificial" music streams.
This is not yet a full-fledged trial, Drake's lawyers have filed only a preliminary petition asking for information, in particular, documents and communications from UMG and Spotify regarding the song "Not like us".
