More than 250,000 people took part in the event on Tuesday in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district. This is more than three times the authorized number. Reportedly, only 80,000 people were authorized.
Doctors at the district hospital say that most of the victims died of suffocation.

In its first news report, local police described a scene of chaos as preacher Suraj Pal Singh, also known as "Bhole Baba," drove his car. The report said that thousands of parishioners ran screaming toward the car, crushing the people inside.
