Canada imposes new sanctions on 21 people in Belarus for suppressing protests and human rights violations after the 2020 presidential election.

Canada has announced sanctions against 21 individuals in response to the Lukashenka regime's systematic abuses and continued persecution of Belarusians protesting the results of the 2020 presidential election. This is stated in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada, UNN reports .

Details

It is noted that the sanctions are aimed at current and former high-ranking officials, including members of the security forces, prosecutors, representatives of the judiciary and the administration of penal and "educational" colonies in Belarus, who participated in the suppression of the right of Belarusians to peaceful protests.

These individuals were involved in or complicit in arbitrary arrests and detentions, cruelty, intimidation and excessive use of force against Belarusians protesting against the fraudulent elections, as well as in ill-treatment after they were wrongfully convicted, sentenced and imprisoned. The EU has already imposed sanctions against these individuals

the statement said.

The sanctions were announced on the sidelines of a visit to Ottawa by exiled Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

We will never tolerate blatant disregard for democratic rights. Today, we are sending a clear message to Belarus: Canada will continue to support Belarusians in their struggle to realize their right to a democratic future. We will continue to put pressure on the Lukashenko regime and support human rights defenders and political prisoners
