Bulgaria expands humanitarian aid system for Ukrainian refugees

Bulgaria provides state aid to Ukrainian refugees, covering living expenses for those who have been granted temporary protection. More than 171,000 people have registered for assistance.

On December 28, the Bulgarian Cabinet of Ministers decided to to continue the humanitarian aid program for Ukrainian refugees. This is reported by The Sofia Globe, according to UNN.

Details

The humanitarian aid scheme provides for state payments to places of accommodation for people who fled the war in Ukraine and who have been granted temporary protection in Bulgaria in accordance with a European Commission directive.

The system was first introduced by the government of Kirill Petkov's government shortly after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The scheme has been changed and extended several times, and according to the latest government decision, it was supposed to expire on December 31, 2023.

According to the official government portal of Bulgaria portal, since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, a total of 2,133,450 Ukrainians have entered Bulgaria, of whom 52,125 remain in Bulgaria.

A total of 171,571 persons have been registered for temporary protection in Bulgaria.

Under the 6919 people were employed under the state scheme.
