Bashar al-Assad, the former Syrian dictator who fled to moscow after overthrowing the regime, has been named the “Corruptor of 2024” by the OCCRP consortium of investigative journalists, writes UNN.

OCCRP, a consortium of investigative journalists, has recognized former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, who fled to moscow after his regime was toppled, as the “corrupt man of 2024.

“The Assad regime has been sowing violence, drugs and corruption throughout the region, earning billions of dollars from the production of Captagon (a synthetic drug - ed.) and various types of organized crime such as human trafficking, tobacco smuggling, antiquities theft and arms trafficking,” the OCCRP said in a press release.

The OCCRP Consortium of Investigative Journalists established the Corruptor of the Year Award in 2012 for “the most notable figures in organized crime and corruption.
