Azerbaijan has submitted an official application for membership in the BRICS organization, co-founded by Russia, which is also chairing it this year. This was reported by Reportwith reference to Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Ayhan Hajizade, UNNreported.

The report does not specify when exactly Azerbaijan applied to join the BRICS.
Nevertheless, it is known that last month Baku declared its desire to join the association in a declaration adopted at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Astana.
The decision on the accession of new BRICS members may be made at the summit in October 2024, which will be held in Kazan, Russia.

The BRICS is named after the English initials of the founding countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
Currently, the organization consists of nine states: in addition to the above-mentioned, last year Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates joined the BRICS.
