In order to preserve the historic architectural monument of Kyiv, an order has been issued to temporarily suspend all repair and dismantling work at the Bessarabian Market until it is established who is carrying out what work, with whose approval and under whose control. This was reported by the head of the KCMA Serhiy Popko, UNN reports.

...Recently, the public in the capital has been regularly paying attention to various incidents related to the protection of the city's historic architecture. One of the most recent such cases was the Bessarabian Market, which is known throughout Ukraine and beyond. Repair and dismantling works have begun there, which have rightly caused a public outcry

- Popko said.

He noted that concerned Kyiv residents, journalists, and activists are worried about whether these works will damage the building.

Therefore, Popko said that he, as the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, had issued an order to ensure the guaranteed preservation of the historic architectural monument in Kyiv and to ensure the transparency of all work on the Bessarabian Market:

  • to temporarily suspend all types of repair and dismantling work on Bessarabian Market until it is established who is carrying out what kind of work, with whose approval and under whose control at Bessarabian Market;
  • Provide unimpeded public access to the construction site to avoid manipulation and ensure transparency of media coverage.

"The relevant structural units have already started to fulfill my order. Kyiv residents will be promptly informed about the progress of this order," Popko said.

Context

Civil society activist Dmytro Perov reported that construction work had begun on the Bessarabian market in the center of Kyiv.

"The workers say that there will be a 'reconstruction', but there are no signs anywhere. The building was built in 1912, designed by Heinrich-Julian Guy. The building is an architectural monument, only restoration is allowed here," Perov wrote .

KCSA Deputy Head Valentyn Mondriyivskyi stated that the indoor market at 2 Bessarabska Square is still in the process of organizing part of the interior space and restoring the trading rows. In particular, the market does not stop working, and in part of the premises, the floor superstructures of the post-Soviet period are being removed.
