A 68-year-old Frenchman died after his car became stuck in Death Valley. The tourist walked across the salt flats in temperatures of 46°C.

A 68-year-old tourist from France died in Death Valley National Park in California after his car became stuck on a remote road and the air temperature reached 46 degrees Celsius. The national park administration reported this, DPA reported, according to UNN.

Details

According to rangers, the man was traveling with a companion when their car became stuck on a remote road within the park. They decided to leave the vehicle and walk across the salt flats to a road with heavier traffic.

During the crossing, the 68-year-old man stopped approximately two kilometers from the place where his companion managed to reach the road. A passing driver helped him there. Rangers launched a search operation, but arrived too late to save the tourist.

This is a painful reminder of how quickly conditions here can become dangerous

- said Death Valley National Park Superintendent Mike Reynolds.

He also emphasized the dangers of high temperatures, long distances, and the remoteness of some areas of the park.

Death Valley is an extraordinary place, but its heat, distances, and remoteness can be dangerous, regardless of experience. We are grateful to everyone who took part in the search, and our thoughts are with his loved ones

- Reynolds added.

Recommendations for tourists

The park administration warns visitors about the dangerous summer heat and urges them to follow safety measures. Mobile phone coverage is unavailable in many areas of Death Valley, and some roads are suitable only for off-road vehicles.

Tourists are advised to take a sufficient supply of water with them. In the event of a vehicle breakdown, the park service recommends that it is safer to remain in the vehicle, since search teams can spot a car more easily than a person walking through open terrain.

Death Valley is considered one of the hottest places on Earth. Its territory lies 86 meters below sea level, making it also the lowest and driest place in North America. According to forecasts, temperatures in the region could exceed 47 degrees Celsius this weekend.
