Roskomnadzor has blocked Viber in Russia for “violating the law.” The messenger, owned by the Japanese company Rakuten, is used by 26% of the Russian population.

Roskomnadzor has announced the blocking of Viber messenger in Russia, UNN reports with reference to the Russian media.

The Russian agency justified this by "violating the requirements of the Russian legislation to the organizers of information dissemination, the fulfillment of which is necessary to prevent threats of using the messenger for terrorist and extremist purposes, recruiting citizens for their commission, selling drugs, as well as in connection with the posting of illegal information.

Viber messenger is owned by the Japanese company Rakuten. According to Mediascope, 26% of the Russian population uses it on average per month.
