Ukraine has become one of the most mined countries in the world because of the Russian invasion, and mines left over from World War II are now being discovered in forests and other places. This was reported by the Ministry of Environment, UNN writes.
The Russian invasion has made Ukraine the most mined country in the world. In addition, Ukrainians regularly discover mines left over from World War II in forests and other places. According to the UNDP, in Europe, demining took about 15 years after the end of the war. However, in Ukraine, there are prospects for solving 75-80% of this problem over the next 3-5 years.

In addition to the direct threat to human life, mines pose a danger to the environment:
- Mine detonations often cause fires, especially in remote areas, which are difficult to extinguish quickly and easily.
- Explosions also lead to chemical contamination of the soil, which can remain for many years.
- The mining of territories significantly limits the possibilities of environmental management.
- Wild and domestic animals often fall on mines. This leads to a total change in ecosystems, an increase in the number of invasive plant species due to the large area of disturbed territories after the war.
